Take a look at the spate of online bingo ads recently launched on UK television and you’d be forgiven for thinking that bingo is a ladies-only game.

Stereotyping is an age-old problem. Plenty of people like to think that the French smell, Brits are football hooligans and bingo is played by old grannies with blue rinses.
Of course British hooligans do exist and some older ladies do enjoy a spot of bingo, but the problem comes when you start to believe that this is the whole picture.
Many online bingo sites have decided that only women are interested in bingo and so deck their sites out in pink and show adverts which are targeted to appeal to women only, turning men off completely. This seems like a somewhat narrow way of marketing a fun form of entertainment in which players can win money.
Men are known to be big fans of all types of gambling and although it’s possible that currently, more women play bingo, this is most likely due to the fact that sites are geared towards them.
Just take a look at recent television or online adverts to get an idea of how the online bingo world looks. One bingo site has a man dressing up as a woman in order to go online and play bingo. Another, which aroused some controversy, had a man with ample man-boobs, trying to breastfeed a baby, with the slogan, ‘Where have all the women gone?’, the idea being that they’re all off playing bingo.
Traditionally, casinos are targeted at men and bingo at women, however, gambling firms are losing out on huge potential revenue by not investigating the crossover.
Bingo has advantages over other gambling games in that it is a very sociable activity. Recent instances of big prizes over a million pounds have given the game a boost and put it back in the headlines.
The clichéd adverts used by some online bingo sites merely reinforce the stereotype of granny bingo and do nothing to shed the misconceptions and encourage men to have a go.
